What are the three passes of Everest region?

There are many high altitude passes in the region. The most popular ones are Chola Pass (5420 m), Renjo La Pass (5360 m), and Kongma La Pass (5535 m). The trek through these passes makes a formidable trekking route called Everest Three High Passes Trek. Yes, this trekking trip has all the elements of diverse and challenging trekking route. Interestingly, trekkers can get chance to reach the Everest Base Camp too!

Kongma La Pass Crossing

Trekkers follow the path of Everest Base Camp Trek until Dingboche. After second acclimatization activity in Dingboche, trekkers head towards Lobuche via Kongma La Pass. This is the first pass on this trekking route. It is scariest out of all the passes on this trip. The trail is hardly trekked. Therefore, don’t try to cross this pass alone. You need an expert navigator. There are lots of hidden crevasses and icy lakes in the section. Rugged terrain and trail over the glacier & moraine make it difficult for the trekkers to successfully navigate. From the top of the Kongma La Pass, trekkers can get an astounding views of mountains and Khumbu Valley. Upon crossing the pass, trekkers reach the Lobuche. This is a small teahouses and lodges based town on the bank of river.

Trek to Everest Base Camp

Before heading towards second pass, trekkers trek to Everest Base Camp. This is one of the highlights of the trip. In this long walking trip, the chance to visit the base camp of Mt. Everest is definitely welcoming. After the visit of base camp, you can either choose to hike Kalapathar or return back towards Chola Pass. The choice is yours. We recommend you to take a route back to Chola rather than going up to Kalapathar. In this trekking trip, trekkers reach places of near altitude like Kalapathar. The view is prettier. Therefore, it is not wise to waste energy.

Chola Pass Crossing

The Chola Pass is the second pass on the Three High Passes Trek. This is probably the most famous high altitude pass of the region. If you want to do this pass crossing only then choose our EBC Chola Pass Trek. After a day’s hike from Everest Base Camp, trekkers reach the Chola Pass phedi. It must be crossed as early as possible! The unpredictable nature of weather in the region make it harder for the trekkers to cross if the weather worsens. From the top of the Chola Pass, trekkers can get the mountain vistas of more than a dozen mountains including the Mt. Choyou. On the other side of the pass is gorgeous Gokyo Valley.

Gokyo Lake

There are altogether 5 lakes within the Gokyo Lake System. Out of these 5 lakes, third lake is the most famous. There are few teahouses and restaurants on the shores of the lake. The lake water is blue turquoise and provides breathtaking scenery of mountains mirroring in its clear crisp water. Babu Treks has a separate trekking trip for the trekkers to enjoy majestic Gokyo Lakes and the valley. Choose our Gokyo Lake Trek trip and enjoy the pristine tranquil environment of Gokyo!

In this valley like Kalapathar, you may not need to climb the Gokyo Ri. It is a hill right next to Gokyo Lake. The next day’s hike to the top of Renjo La Pass offer similar kind of view. Therefore, don’t waste energy and try to conserve it for pass crossing.

Renjo La Pass Crossing

Finally, the third pass of Three High Passes Trek is the Renjo La Pass. The pass is smaller in comparison to two other passes but it is equally interesting. Trekkers can relish the chance to witness mountains as far as Mt. Makalu. Therefore, the top of Renjo La is refreshing. The trail is rugged and long. You will have to traverse through rocky trail for most part of the trek!

Everest Climbing Sherpa’ Villages

In Everest Three High Passes Trek, trekkers can visit many Sherpa villages. Khumjung, Khunde, Pangboche, Dingboche, and Thame are major villages of the region. It is said that Thame is the village where more than a hundred record holders live. Therefore, it is called as the Everest Village! Interestingly, the first person to climb the Mt. Everest Tenzing Norgay belongs to the same village.
